IPL Spot Fixing Scam:How The Scandal Came To Light

IPL SPOT FIXING 2013, SPECIAL CELL, DELHI POLICE, INSP. BADRISH DUTT, S. SREESANTH, AJIT CHANDILA
In the third week of April 2013 secret information was received by Inspector Badrish Dutt, a master investigator in the office of The Special Cell,Lodhi Colony,Delhi that some members of the Mumbai underworld are involved in match fixing in the ongoing Indian Premier League matches in liaison with some bookies and players. Acting on the information the inspector got an FIR registered No.20/2013 dated 9.05.2013 under section 420/120B IPC at police station special cell. The Contents of the FIR were as follows:-

“Secret Information was received in the third week of April 2013 that certain members of the  underworld are involved in some sort of fixing of ongoing cricket matches of Indian Premium League with active participation of some unidentified conduits based in Delhi.

“It was also revealed that these conducts are contacting the cricket players who have been recently engaged by IPL sponsors at very high prices for the respective teams with a view to stage manage some matches for making windfall gains through several bookies, who facilitate illegal gambling in the sport.

“It had also been informed that players who will be ‘fixed’ will be paid huge amount to underperform during pre decided bowling over’s/spells. For these over(s) / spells huge amounts of money will be put on stake by bookies.

“Such acts will amount in cheating innocent and sports loving people of their hard earned money used in purchasing tickets.

“Large number of people watches the matches; not only in stadiums, purchasing costly tickets, but also across the globe through televisions and internet expecting it to be a fair play. The telecast of matches involve large sum of money through advertisements. As a result of such malpractices.

“ The innocent and sports loving people end up getting robbed of their precious time and money.

“In order to at upon this information technical and manual surveillance was deployed and so far.

“ It has come to my notice that suspects (match fixers and bookies) from Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab etc. and some players participating in this Indian Premier League tournament have joined together to indulge in spot and match fixing.

“The above said group decides before a match as to which portion of the match will be ‘fixed’. Pre-decided signals will be given by the players to the bookies that will clearly visible in the stadium or on the television for initiating heavy betting.

“In this process, the ‘fixed’ player would get a huge amount as illegal gratification over and above his contractual valuealready committed to him by his franchisee.
These kinds of malpractice by the group cheat innocent cricket fans of their hard earned money.

“Under these circumstances a case under section 120B/420 IPC is made out. Kindly register a case and hand over the investigation to the undersigned. Date and time of occurrence: Since April 2013, place of Occurrence: Delhi and other parts of India. Date and time of handing Rukka: 09.05.2013 at 12.05 PM Sd/- English (Inspector Badrish Dutt) D-1/1067-PIS No. 16910014, NDR/Spl. Cell, Lodhi Colony. Sd/- English Insp. Pawan Kumar, Special Cell/NDR. On receipt of the complaint the FIR has been registered and the copy of the same will be sent to I.O. and senior officer for necessary action by dak. By / DO.”

Subsequently investigations were taken up by Insp. Badrish however on may 11,2013 just a day before he was to lead a police team to Mumbai to make arrests in this case. Insp. Badrish was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Gurgaon. In light of his sudden demise the raid was aborted. Whether he committed suicide or was murdered is a mystery till date also the possibility of him becoming a victim of spot-fixers cannot also be ruled out . Initially shocked by the death of their colleague the elite officers of special cell regrouped and were able to successfully unearthen the entire racket.

Why Choose A Career In Policing?

Today I came across a piece of news that startled me. Delhi Police has the least number of applicants from Delhi. I was baffled, ideally it should have been the exact opposite. The 80,000+ force comprises of personnel mostly from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In my opinion the today's youth living in metropolitan cities has preconceived notions about police. They are ill aware and do not even consider policing as a career option all thanks to a vicious image created by the media. Through this blog I intend to change that very mindset and encourage the "Generation Y" to take up policing as a career. There are many reasons why one would want to be a police officer but the most compelling of them all is the chance to help people when they need it the most, the ability to make a difference and the opportunity to bring about a change, also there are other perks such as job security, prestige, medical other health benefits and of course pension. In my opinion all of these benefits are prodigious considering the fact that we are living in an age where 1$=Rs. 68 and recession is looming on our head. A police officer has great power and responsibilities, he is a pillar of the society, his decisions have a direct impact on the masses and then there is fame, more fame than a person could ever get by working in a private company for the sake of an example one can google "dcp, crime branch" and see the huge number of links that crop up.The job of a police officer is exciting it is not a regular 9-5 job and you never know what will you be doing the next day.One can also get to chance to go abroad on central deputation and work with organizations such as the United Nations all in all a career as a police officer is indeed a rewarding one.
